Cristiano Ronaldo dropped from Portugal team

Cristiano Ronaldo dropped from Portugal team

 - Update ]
Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of Portugal’s first squad since the 2018 World Cup.
The Portugal captain will not be available for their Nations League match against Italy on September 10.
Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in July, was not expected to be in the squad.
Coach Fernando Santos previously indicated he hoped Ronaldo would continue to play, however.
“I am convinced that he has a lot to give in football,” Santos said after Portugal’s World Cup exit.
“There is a tournament in September, the Nations League, and we hope that he is with us so that he can help the young players who will need their captain’s example.”

Zimbabwe Opposition Leader, Chamisa Insists He Won Elections

Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa on Saturday refused to accept a Constitutional Court ruling that upheld Emmerson Mnangagwa’s win in presidential elections last month.
In his first comments since the country’s top court overturned the opposition’s legal challenge to have the results annulled, Chamisa vowed to lead “peaceful protests”.
“I have a legitimate claim that I am supposed to lead the people of Zimbabwe,” the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party said Saturday.
“Yes, judgement has been made but as far as we are concerned, we have a view that is contrary to the view of the Constitutional Court,” Chamisa said.
“The court’s decision is not the people’s decision. The people who voted do not believe in (Mnangagwa). We have got a clear majority.”
In a verdict widely predicted by analysts, Chief Justice Luke Malaba strongly criticised the MDC party’s case and upheld Mnangagwa’s win.
Robert Mugabe’s successor Mnangagwa, of the ruling ZANU-PF party, won the July 30 election with 50.8 percent of the vote — just enough to meet the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a run-off against Chamisa, who scored 44.3 percent.
The elections were largely judged to be free of the violence which characterised previous elections in Zimbabwe.
Chamisa insists he won more than two-thirds of the vote.
“The legal door is not the only door to happiness,” he said. “Using our constitutional right, we have a right to peaceful protests. This is the route we will take. One of them.”
Mnangagwa took over from Mugabe after the long-time ruler was ousted following a brief military takeover in November 2017.
He vowed to hold free and fair elections and mend strained relations with the west but his plan was marred when soldiers fired at protesters on August 1 killing at least six people.
His inauguration will now take place on Sunday.

Man United owners, Glazer family take decision on Mourinho’s future

Manchester United owners, the Glazer family have decided to sack manager Jose Mourinho if he fails to steer the club to a top-four finish this season.
Mourinho is unhappy at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils are in a bad shape after just two games into the new Premier League season.
There have been talks of former Real Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane replacing the 55-year-old at Old Trafford.
However, the Manchester Evening News reports that the club’s owners are not considering showing him the exit door yet until they are sure United will not make Champions League spot.
Manchester United face Tottenham on Monday night.
United lost their last game to Brighton at the Amex last Sunday after winning 2-1 against Leicester City the previous week

Griezmann fires Atletico to first La Liga win of season

Antoine Griezmann scored the winner as Atletico Madrid notched their first La Liga victory of the campaign by edging out Rayo Vallecano 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.

The French World Cup-winner struck in the 63rd minute of the La Liga game as Diego Simeone’s men sent their newly-promoted visitors to a second straight defeat.
Atletico, who have been tipped to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the title this term, kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw at Valencia on the opening weekend.
But despite labouring for long periods, they proved too strong for an impressive Rayo, who were champions of the second-tier Segunda Division last term.
Reigning champions Barcelona will look to back up their opening win over Alaves later on Saturday when they take on Valladolid, before Champions League holders Real Madrid face Girona on Sunday.
La Liga Atletico were unsurprisingly the stronger team in the first half, with big-money signing Thomas Lemar denied his first goal since joining from Monaco by a good save from Rayo goalkeeper Alberto Garcia.
A VAR review for an Atletico penalty appeal ruled in Rayo’s favour shortly before half-time, but the hosts broke the deadlock through Griezmann.
Montenegrin centre-back Stefan Savic climbed highest to nod down a corner, and Griezmann, who scored 29 goals in all competitions last season, swivelled to slot into the net.
Atletico struggled to close out the win, though, with goalkeeper Jan Oblak having to keep out Adri Embarba’s free-kick and dive at the feet of Alex Moreno to smother the full-back’s effort.
But the La Liga’s Slovenian ‘keeper kept his best save for the 90th minute, as he sprung to his right to beat away Sergio Moreno’s well-struck shot and ensure Atletico took all three points.
Threats of a player strike over plans to stage La Liga matches in the United States had overshadowed the build-up to the weekend, and Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui gave his full backing to the players.
“I’m absolutely at the side of the players, they have arguments and reasons to think what they think,” he said.
“I sincerely don’t understand (the US plans). That’s my opinion, and from here, the decision-makers will decide, but I’m in line with the feelings of the players.”
Earlier on Saturday, Alaves and Real Betis played out a goalless draw as both teams got off the mark for the season after defeats last week.

    20 Recommendation on your blog.

The 20 recommendation for you BLOG

    20 Recommendations for Your Blog

We receive plenty of emails asking for advice about starting a blog, about how to blog, about blog topics, and about creating meaningful content—even a few questions about whether we wear boxers or briefs. These are the answers and recommendations we tend to give.

Find Your Niche. You needn’t have a niche, but it helps. When learning how to be a blogger, it’s important to ask yourself what you’re passionate about. Running? Cooking? Being a parent? Have you found your passion? If so, whatever it is, write about that. If not, then you must first find your passion. (Note: We generally recommend that people don’t start a blog about minimalism or the paleo diet or any other heavily saturated topic. But what we really mean when we say this is: don’t create a blog about something unless you have a unique perspective. If you’ve embraced simple living and have a unique perspective, then by all means have at it. Enjoy yourself.)

Define Your Ideal Readers. Once you’ve found your niche, you need to know who will be reading your blog. For example, we blog about living intentionally. Thus, our ideal readers are people who are interested in exploring minimalism so they can clear the path toward more meaningful lives. If you want to write about your newborn baby growing up, that’s wonderful: your ideal readers are probably your friends and family. If you want to write about restoring classic cars, that’s cool, too. Tailor your writing to your readers (whether it’s your family or local community or whoever else will read your blog).

Add Value. Your blog must add value to its readers’ lives. This is the only way you will get Great Quality Readers to your site (and keep them coming back). Adding value is the only way to get someone’s long-term buy-in. We both learned this after a decade of leading and managing people in the corporate world.

Be Original. Yes, there are other blogs out there about the same thing you want to write about. Question: So why is your blog different? Answer: Because of you. You are what makes your blog different. It’s about your perspective, your creativity, the value that you add.

Be Interesting. Write epic, awesome content. Especially if you want people to share it with others.

Be Yourself. Part of being interesting is telling your story. Every person is unique, and your story is an important one. The important part of storytelling, however, is removing the superfluous details that make the story uninteresting. A great storyteller removes 99% of what really happens—the absorptive details—and leaves the interesting 1% for the reader.

Be Honest. Your blog needs to be authentic—it needs to feel real—if you want people to read it. You can be your blog, or your blog can be you. That is, do you really embody the stuff you write about? If not, people will see through you. “Be the change you want to see in the world,” is the famous Gandhi quote. Perhaps bloggers should build the blog they want to write for the world.

Transparency. Being transparent is different from being honest. You needn’t share every detail about your life just for the sake of being honest. Always be honest, and be transparent when it adds value to what you’re writing. (You won’t ever see pictures of us using the restroom on our site, because that’s just not relevant.)

Time. Once you’ve learned how to start a blog, you’ll learn that blogging takes a lot of time, especially if you’re as neurotic as we are (we spent over 10 hours testing the fonts on this site). And see those black Twitter and Facebook icons in the header? We spent hours on those, deciding what was right for us). That said, once you have your design set up, don’t tweak it too much. Instead, spend the time on your writing.

Vision. The reason our site design looks good is because we have a great host, we have a great theme, and most important, we had a vision of how we wanted our blog to look. Once we had the vision, we worked hard to make that vision a reality. (Note: neither of us had any design experience prior to starting a blog.) It’s hard to create a beautiful blog if you don’t know what you want it to look like.

Find Your Voice. Over time, good writers discover their voice and their writing tends to develop a certain aesthetic, one that is appealing to their readers. Finding your voice makes your writing feel more alive, more real, more urgent. For additional reading, check out Joshua’s essay about Finding Your Voice.

We Instead of You. Use the the first-person plural when possible. Statements of we and our are more powerful than than you and your, especially when talking about negative behaviors or tendencies. The first person comes off as far less accusatory. Think of it this way: we’re writing peer-to-peer—we are not gods.

When to Post. Question: When is the best day and time to publish a blog post? Answer: It doesn’t really matter. We don’t adhere to a particular schedule. Some weeks we post one essay; sometimes we post three. Yes, it is important to write consistently, but you needn’t get too bogged down in the details.

Social Media. Yes, we recommend using Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to help connect with your audience and other bloggers, but don’t get too caught up in it. Focus on the writing first, social media thereafter.

Ignore Negative Criticism and Stupidity. Sure, we get a lot of negative comments and stupid questions from ignorant people who aren’t really our readers (e.g., negative comments like “You’re not real minimalists” and stupid questions like “Are you guys gay?”). We call these people seagulls: they fly in, crap on your site, and fly away. But we pay them no mind, because we didn’t start our blog for them. Delete their comment and move on.

Research. Spend time researching what you’re writing about. The reason we are able to use so many helpful, relevant links in our essays is because we put in the time to research our topics.

Keep It Simple. This is where minimalism can be applied to starting any blog, irrespective of its genre. No need to place superfluous advertisements or widgets all over your site. Stick to the basics and remove anything you don’t need. Remove anything that doesn’t add value.

Picture. Put a picture of yourself on your blog. People identify with other people. If two goofy guys from Ohio aren’t too afraid to put their pictures on their site, then you have nothing to worry about.

Comments. If you’re going to have comments on your site, then read The Five Words That Kill Your Blog by Scott Stratten.

Live Your Life. You’re blogging about your life (or about certain aspects of your life, at least), so you still need to live your life. There are things that we always put before writing: exercise, health, relationships, experiences, personal growth, contribution.

3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A BLOG

Money. You should not start a blog to make money. We need to get that out of the way first. If your primary objective is to replace your full-time income from blogging, forget about it. It doesn’t work that way. Do you think that Jimi Hendrix picked up his first guitar so he could “supplement his income”? No, he didn’t. Rather, he did it for the love of it, for the joy and fulfillment he received, and the income came thereafter, much later actually.

Notoriety. Don’t plan on getting “Internet famous” right away. Not every site grows as fast as ours did, but that’s totally OK. The truth is that we kind of got lucky. We got a great domain name, we cobbled together a logo and site design that people really liked, we write fairly well, and our content connects with people in a unique way. We didn’t start this site to become “famous” though. That’d be ridiculous. Our notoriety and quick rise to “fame” came as a surprise to us, and was a result of a little luck and a lot of hard, passionate work.

Traffic. Not all traffic is good traffic, so don’t worry about getting thousands of readers right away.

The funny thing is that all these things can happen. You could make a full-time income from building a blog. We do it, Corbett Barr does it, and so do many others. And you could become Internet famous like Leo Babauta or Chris Brogan. But if these are the sole reasons why you start blogging, you’ll be miserable, because it will seem like a job, and if it feels like a job you won’t be passionate about it, and so you’ll either (a) hate it, (b) fall flat on your face, or (c) hate it and fall flat on your face.

Instead, write because you’re passionate about it….

Our fears over payment of earned allowances, NHIS — Lawal

Our fears over payment of earned allowances, NHIS — Lawal

    By Mod - 5 hours ago - [ Update Vanguard ]

    Stories by Victor Ahiuma-Young

THE issue of unpaid promotion and other arrears has been a problem in the public service. Organised Labour has once threatened to shut the federal public service over the issue. In this piece, the Secretary General of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, Alade Bashir Lawal, speaks on this, the unending leadership crisis in the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, among others.

    Promotional, other arrears

Secretary General of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, Alade Bashir Lawal

Secretary General of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, Alade Bashir Lawal
The position is that payment has started. As we speak, it is ongoing in the sense that during the settlement of these arrears, there were some observed lapses like some people were not fully paid, some names were omitted. So, we complained and we agreed that those involved should be encouraged to forward their lists and the correct calculations according to their own evaluation, to the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, AGF. This has been done and settlements are being made as they are received.

The issue of salary arrears too is broken into two parts. Some people were employed about four or five years ago but were not captured on time due to bureaucratic bottlenecks here and there. Ones they are captured, it maybe after four years and what is done, their monthly salary commences. Those that have fallen into arrears are now left for the ministry involved to calculate and prepare the necessary papers and present same to the AGF for settlement.

Since this is part of the ongoing agreement that should be settled, that is also being done. But we understand that of late, they said the salary arrears should wait until they finish the promotion arrears. So, we are engaging them on that because what we agreed was that all these arrears should be settled. Since promotional arrears is almost cleared up now, the salary arrears should not be delayed any further.

Along the line too, some people without disciplinary measures hanging on their necks, that have one or two months’ salaries in the last five years were skipped. So, all those unpaid salaries have also fallen into arrears and these are also part of what we are talking about. More, importantly is the issue of promotion arrears. When payment started, it covered 2012 to 2016. But in the process of settlement, 2017 has also fallen into arrears.

We are encouraging the Finance Minister to use the current window to also capture 2017 arrears and settle same. So that from from 2018 the ministries, departments and agencies, MDAs, will now be encouraged to capture people who are promoted as at when due. In this case, the financial entitlement that dovetailed from the promotion will not start falling into arrears again. That is the stage we are. We have written the AGF calling for a meeting so that all these grey areas will be properly put in place so that before the end of the year we can put these issues behind us.

    FEC approval

You know the Federal Executive Council, FEC agreed that N10billion should be earmarked monthly for the settlement of the arrears. Since that decision was taken, we should be talking of close to 15 or 16 now. So, on paper, we expected that as at now, close to N200billion should have been released. But what has been released so far, I am not sure is up to 70 or 80 billion Naira. As they need more money, the authority applies, the minister approves it and it comes to the AGF for the release of cash. The window now is the approval that we are talking about.

That is N10billion monthly release. Since it can cover all these arrears we are talking about, there will be no need to start going to look for fresh approvals. You know if you say you want to start to cover from 2012 to 2016 and it amounts to maybe over N100billion, from what has been approved in principle by FEC, it is going to be N200billion. From the N200billion, you still have some allowance that you can utilise. So, you do not need to start going back for approval. That is what we are talking about.

    Unending crisis in NHIS

The problem we have with NHIS is just the headship of that place. The Director General, DG, with every sense of responsibility is not fit to hold that office. He is always at loggerhead with everybody and when you see a character like that, my own take is that he is not prepared for leadership and possibly he may be also harbouring some hidden agenda not known to us.

That is why we were not happy when he was recalled, he should have been allowed to leave the system in peace. So, since he has come back there, he has been creating one problem or the other, and he is unsettling the system. He is there to create stability, so that the appropriate thing can be done in terms of the oversight functions of the scheme. But, sadly, the man is not doing that, he is always fighting. There is no day he will not pick up quarrel with one perceived enemy or the other. It is quite sad.

We believe that the government should bend backward and review the appointment so that the man will be shown the way out. We don’t need such a leader in the 21st century. He is a disaster. With the current DG, the NHIS cannot meet its mandate. It is possible the man is defending the interest of some faceless individuals, we can say. He is an unstable character and is creating needless distractions and not allowing workers to do their jobs. We have never seen such leadership .

Transfer: Chelsea turn down PSG’s bid for top defender

    2 hours ago - [ Update ]

Chelsea have turned down Paris Saints-Germain’s bid to sign their top defender, Marcos Alonso this summer.

According to Marca, Alonso was the top name on PSG’s list in their quest for a left-back, but the Blues fended off their approach.

The report also claimed that PSG have now turned their attentions back towards Atletico Madrid defender, Filipe Luis.

Alonso has been linked with a move back to his homeland as well as the Ligue 1 champions.

The Spain international Chelsea’s contract will expire in 2021.

He has three years left to run on his deal with the Blues, but the West London club are keen to keep the top defender.

Five Foods To Avoid When You're Over 40

Five Foods To Avoid When You're Over 40

    By Mod - 1 hour ago - [ Update ]

Everything you need to live well

While 40 is a very important age and a milestone in any person’s life, it often comes with adjustments that need to be made to improve the health status of an individual.

Here are five foods you should cut down on once you’re 40 and above:

    Red meat

Diets high in red meat are usually linked to high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and a greater risk of diabetes. Men are at a higher risk of prostate cancer when they consume other meats cooked at high temperatures as this is often carcinogenic.

    Carbonated drinks

Carbonated drinks are usually filled with caffeine, fructose and refined sugar. The caffeine content can trigger gout, and the sugar can increase insulin level, therefore, putting you at risk of having a heart attack by 20 percent.

    White bread products

White bread and other white flour foods usually produce a state of inflammation in the body which can worsen arthritis and cause spikes in blood sugar. Some experts have explained that the additive potassium bromate contained in bread is toxic to human cells and causes cancer in animals.

    French fries

While the consumption of french fries is gradually becoming more common, this kind of food usually pump the arteries with oils. Also, the calories in these fried foods can cause weight gain which can lead to other diseases and hormonal imbalance, while the unhealthy, heated oils found in these foods can lead to heart disease.

    Fruit juice

While fruit juice may seem like a great idea, it is usually not advisable for people over this age. This is because the beneficial fibre has already been removed from the fruit and this can spike the sugar level especially for men with diabetes and gout

Stuart Pearce predicts team that will beat Man City to title

Stuart Pearce predicts team that will beat Man City to title

    By Mod - 6 minutes ago - [ Update ]

Former Manchester City manager, Stuart Pearce, has predicted that Liverpool will win the Premier League ahead of City this season.

Liverpool have won their first two fixtures against West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s side finished fourth in the league last season and lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

But speaking on The Debate, Pearce believes Liverpool now have the experience and belief to go on and win their first Premier League title.

“I personally think they’ll win the league this year,” he said.

“I think it’s a two-horse race between them and City and they might just come out on top.

“I’m seeing a belief within the group that I probably haven’t seen before from the back end of last season. They’re hungry as well. They lost the Champions League final and the manner in the way they lost the final will hurt them.

“They didn’t win the league last year so I think they’ve got the hunger in their belly. They’re chasing that first title for however long and I think that hunger will get them over the line.”

Hackers target smartphones to mine cryptocurrencies

Hackers target smartphones to mine cryptocurrencies

    By Mod - 7 hours ago - [ Update Vanguard ]

Has your smartphone suddenly slowed down, warmed up and the battery drained down for no apparent reason? If so, it may have been hijacked to mine cryptocurrencies.

This new type of cyberattack is called “cryptojacking” by security experts.
It “consists of entrapping an internet server, a personal computer or a smartphone to install malware to mine cryptocurrencies,” said Gerome Billois, an expert at the IT service management company Wavestone.

Mining is basically the process of helping verify and process transactions in a given virtual currency. In exchange miners are now and then rewarded with some of the currency themselves.

Legitimate mining operations link thousands of processors together to increase the computing power available to earn cryptocurrencies.

Mining bitcoin, ethereum, monero and other cryptocurrencies may be very profitable, but it does require considerable investments and generates huge electricity bills.

But hackers have found a cheaper option: surreptitiously exploiting the processors in smartphones.

To lure victims, hackers turn to the digital world’s equivalent of the Trojan horse subterfuge of Greek mythology: inside an innocuous-looking app or programme hides a malicious one.

The popularity of games makes them attractive for hackers.

“Recently, we have discovered that a version of the popular game Bug Smasher, installed from Google Play between one and five million times, has been secretly mining the cryptocurrency monero on users’ devices,” said researchers at IT security firm ESET.

    The phenomenon is apparently growing.

“More and more mobile applications hiding Trojan horses associated to a cryptocurrency mining programme have appeared on the platforms in the last 12 months,” said David Emm, a security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, a leading supplier of computer security and anti-virus software.

“On mobiles the processing power available to criminals is less,” but “there is a lot more of these devices, and therefore taking in total, they offer a greater potential,” he added.

    – Google cleans house –

But for smartphone owners, the mining is at best a nuisance, slowing down the operation of the phone and making it warm to the touch as the processor struggles to unlock cryptocurrency and accomplish other task.

At worst, it can damage the phone.

“On Android devices, the computational load can even lead to ‘bloating’ of the battery and thus to physical damage to, or destruction of, the device,” said ESET.

However, “users are generally unaware” they have been cryptojacked, said Emm.

Cryptojacking affects mostly smartphones running Google’s Android operating system.

Apple exercises more control over apps that can be installed on its phones, so hackers have targetted iPhones less.

But Google recently cleaned up its app store, Google Play, telling developers that it will no longer accept apps that mine cryptocurrencies on its platform.

    – ‘Cat and mouse game’ –

“It is difficult to know which applications to block,” said Pascal Le Digol, the country manager in France for US IT security firm WatchGuard, given that “there are new ones every day.”

Moreover, as the miners try to “be as discreet as possible” the apps do not stand out immediately, he added.

There are steps to take to protect one’s phone.

Besides installing an antivirus programme, it is important “to update your Android phone” to the latest version of the operating system available to it, said online fraud expert Laurent Petroque at F5 Networks.

He also noted that “people who decide to download apps from non-official sources are at more risk of inadvertantly downloading a malicious app”.

Defending against cyberattacks of all kinds is “a game of cat and mouse”, said Le Digol at WatchGuard.

“You need to constantly adapt to the evolution of threats.”

Senior figures at Manchester United have accepted there is a problem with manager Jose Mourinho, but they believe executive vice chairman Ed Woodward can fix it, SportsMail reports.

A miserable summer tour of the USA, coupled with a telling outburst from Paul Pogba and a 3-2 defeat at Brighton on Sunday, have seen tension rise in Old Trafford with just two games into the new season.

Members of the club’s top brass are aware there is an issue which needs to be resolved, but there is no panic.

They have confidence Woodward can deal with it, amid concerns that things could spiral out of control very quickly.

Mourinho is reportedly battling to keep the dressing room together, as most members of his squad are fed up with his methods.

The former Chelsea manager’s criticism of United’s dealings in the transfer market this summer, have touched a nerve with some of the club’s powerbrokers, who believe the manager has not delivered the short-term fix they had hoped for.

United, who host Tottenham on Monday, will report back to Carrington on Wednesday, where it is thought Mourinho will address the situation with his players.
